Redgrave Research Forensic Services is partnering with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office to identify a John Doe whose partial skeletal remains were recovered on February 1,1981, just North of Ojai, California. The deceased was likely in his late 20’s to mid 30’s, between 5’7” and 5’8”. He was found with a green army jacket and two pairs of glasses. The cause and manner of his death were reported as unknown.

The Forensic Genetic Genealogy team at Redgrave Research Forensic Services has begun analyzing the DNA results for this individual, and are encouraged by making steady progress despite the matches being primarily distant cousins from populations with known record gaps. This John Doe’s relatives descend from recently immigrated families from Ireland and Scotland, and Eastern European/Austro-Hungarian/Slovak countries, and the genealogy team would like to ask anyone descended from these populations to consider uploading your DNA to GEDmatch. Additionally, Dr. Redgrave has created a forensic image of what the deceased may have looked like when he was alive, with variants wearing glasses and without.

Anyone who has any information that may lead to the identification of this person should contact Araseli Acevedo from VCSO at (805) 383-8739 or email coldcase@ventura.org.
